Bridging the gap between digital technologies and human safety

I act as a strategic bridge between digital technologies and human safety.

I operate as an independent specialist, often partnering with consultancies to deliver subject matter expertise on digital assurance. I wear two hats: as a Non-Executive Director, I provide strategic governance and oversight. As a Consultant, I provide practical assurance.

1. Consulting: Digital Assurance & Safety Impact

My focus is ensuring digital adoption is safe, compliant, and fit for purpose.

  • Assurance, Risk & Duty of Care: Helping organisations identify where digital adoption creates new liabilities, ensuring they meet their duty of care to users and staff. This includes conducting online safety governance gap analyses and audits (e.g. for national device rollout programmes or international education groups).

  • Safety by Design: Conducting risk assessments and evaluations of proposed digital products to identify harms and embed safety features prior to deployment. Evaluating the effectiveness of online safety projects and interventions.

  • AI Strategy & Governance: Guiding on the responsible adoption of AI. This includes co-creating procurement frameworks (AI selection tools), delivering workforce upskilling, and keynote speaking on AI utility vs. risk.

2. Non-Executive Leadership

I bring a specialised understanding of digital society and digital risk to the boardroom.

  • Chair: Advisory Committee for Scotland, Ofcom (Public Appointment).

  • Member: Advertising Advisory Committee, ASA (Independent Appointment).

  • Previous: Vice Chair, Borders College Regional Board (Board Lead for Cyber Risk Oversight, 2019-2024).

Background & Research

I combine a long-term interest in AI (1st Class Degree in Linguistics & AI) with business rigour (MBA Distinction).

My work is grounded in independent research, including auditing 100+ apps, devices, and games quarterly for a national safety resource. My commitment to the field was recognised with an NSPCC Childhood Champion Award.
